Esau's genealogy is a record of mixture and secularization. Blood from outside the covenant — Hori, Ishmael, Canaan — was blended in, and from Eliphaz and Timna came Amalek, Israel's archenemy. A secularization that put political alliance first ended in division and strife. Scripture strictly forbids mixing and commands holiness — that is, separation. A life that grasps the world's way and God's way at once holds no true joy. The Christian must live set apart, with a pure identity.
